Cameron Todd Willingham refused to walk to his execution. To his last moment he proclaimed his innocence of the arson that claimed the lives of his children. While much has been written of the trial, conviction and execution of Willingham, Inferno is the first exploration of the possible causes of the fire that cost three children, and eventually, Willingham himself, their lives.

Instead of him saving her, Amber would save her daddy. She would save him by awakening him with her screams and pleas, by telling him of the fire, by taking his place in bed, by breathing in the smoke that would have filled his lungs instead of hers.

The fire, however, would not be denied. Disguised first as justice and then as a needle, it would consume her father just as surely as it had Amber and her infant sisters.

While much has been written of the trial, conviction and execution of Cameron Todd Willingham, the discussion has been limited to whether or not the fire that killed his children was caused by arson. This is the first book to investigate other possible causes of the fire that claimed initially three, and eventually four lives.

This is a good introduction to the Willingham case. While I would agree it is at times redundant that is most often because the evidence is redundant in how it is presented, meaning the same evidence is often approached in different reports or witness accounts. So it can repeat depending on the source. I like the reliance on official documents but I am undoubtedly biased in that regard because my books rely on court transcripts and sworn affidavits. Maybe true crime will branch more into reality with less reliance on imagination. In this respect, I admire the author's attempt to do his own experiments but do wonder about the required assumptions necessary in the process. Be that as it may, I strongly recommend this book as a quick and inexpensive introduction to the Willingham wrongful execution. If it peaks your interest, and hopefully it will, check out the documentary on the subject, "Incendiary: The Willingham Case." Unfortunately Amazon does not have it.

Inferno An Inquiry Into the Willingham Fire edition by J Bennett Allen Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

I just could not put this book down! Well written and a sad indictment of the legal system.
This kind of injustice happens in any country I'm sure, and it's sad that those who do the most harm (Valesquez, Martin & Fogg in this case) get away scot free! It's to be hoped at some stage thay are called to answer for it. I look forward to reading more of this author.
Excellent work. The author should continue creating these examples. A vital part of freedom is a modern implementation of law, order and justice. New forensic techniques are finding not guilty parties in jail. Case studies like these should help to foster the idea of better laws and sentencing. Congratulations on such a meaningful story.
I tried several times to read this book and found the repetitive way that this writer wrote this story out to be frustrating. Not only do you read the same lines over and over again but it is over explained as far as the writer's processes and reasoning for changing some wording. Couldn't finish this book but felt compelled to leave a review.
If you know well Cameron Todd Willingham's case,Maybe you think this book is(a little)awkward,And If you don't know his case at all,you may think author's style is too sensational or overly emotional..
But In fact, his case, executed even science proved the fire was not arson shortly before execution day,let you know so many surprising flaws.
Author's style is a little confusing because there's little apparent divide between transcripts and author's own thought,But for those don't know his case, also, who is trying to help "still alive" death row prisoners, (Like author, and like myself)which make me bow my head and have to use my time to research living prisoners,This book is useful as first step to know about executed innocent man,and how system let him executed. But,even this book is written with passion, rather, because written with passion, this book includes one-person's viewpoints.I recommend this book's reader to also read New York Times article, also Chicago tribune article.
Every person associated with this case failed to perform the most basic duties of their jobs, starting with the investigators. The tunnel vision of all parties, combined with outright lies on the witness stand and the jury's inability or unwillingness to critically examine the facts presented, led to the state sanctioned murder of a bereaved father.
The author's straightforward presentation of the facts presented at trial contrasted with his commonsense approach to determining the veracity of that information lead the reader to the conclusion that the legal system failed Cameron and Stacy Willingham.
This is a very interesting book and I have read it twice. I always admired governor Rick Perry until I read this book. I am very disappointed in him now. Mr. Willingham seemed to love his children and if you want to get rid of them why choose fire? I believe an innocent man was executed. I do wonder why the book doesn't mention why the wife worked and not the husband, and why he was at home with the children.
A very interesting case but this book was very repetitive. I enjoyed the use of actual transcripts, but the author repeated the same material over and over and over ad nauseam. His own entries were interesting enough. The same happened with the pictures; as in ... here take a look at this picture again ... and once more ... I think the author has the talent to present a more interesting book than he did; if he could plan and prepare to present his information in a linear fashion without repeating himself. Again, an interesting and sad case.
